Too picky - WIP Wednesday

I am off to the Road to California Quilt show early this morning.  I can't wait to see what wonderful things await me there!

Thanks to the holiday on Monday, and a sick Olivia (nothing serious, just no school), I don't feel like I've spent much time at the machine the last few days.  I did put the borders on the OBW quilt.

I had just enough of the original fabric left to make a border.  The quilt is now a decent lap throw size.  I am stumped on how to back it.  Usually, I use left over fabric from piecing to back my quilts - but this one just had the one fabric and I used it all.  A nice navy solid would look nice, but I don't have much left from the Totally Groovy quilt.  I'm not ready for a white backing.  I have a few other blues that would do, but not enough and for some reason they don't look good used together.  Perhaps I am getting too picky??   A possibility!

I'll worry more about it when I return from the quilt show.  I wonder how many Inspirational Sunday's posts I will get out of this show.  I hope you come back to find out.

• My Blue & White One Block Wonder -This is my January UFO - I finished up the borders for this one, but I am still contemplating what to do for the backing.

• Star of Africa Bee - catch up time!!  
• Curves Class goodies - Class started last week, but I have been a little distracted.  I am super excited about several of the projects that have been presented so far.  Hopefully you will be seeing some from me soon.
• Discontinuity Quilt - this is a class I am taking tomorrow at Road to California!  During the class, we are supposed to complete 1/2 of a crib-sized quilt.  I am determined not to let it stay 1/2 a quilt.  

Back Burner:

These will likely be touched in a couple of weeks.

• Handstitched Medallion Quilt - quilting in progress. 
• Beginner Quilt Along at Quilting Gallery - top needs to be put together. It is ridiculous that I haven't just slapped this one together

Channeling my inner Jenny - finish Friday

OK, so you already saw this quilt, but I was able to get some better pictures of it in the morning light after dropping the kids off at school.

As you can see, I was really trying to channel my inner Jenny Pedigo (from Sew Kind of Wonderful).  She does the most amazing things with little squiggles, and pebbles.  I love to see what she quilts each week.

Honestly though, when I looked at my little flimsy and began to ponder quilting it  All I could see was that white space.  I couldn't get it out of my head, so instead of quilting an all over design, I went with my first thoughts.  None of the colored fabric is quilted (at least not intentionally, I do still wiggle a bit on the seam lines).

And look!  I even tried some more of the dreaded feathers!  I've said it before, and I'll say it again - I wouldn't have even attempted to do them if it hadn't been for Patsy Thompson's lesson as part of the December Free Motion Challenge at Sew Cal Gal.  Most of the links for the tutorials are still active.  If improving your FMQ is on your "to do" list for 2013, those tutorials are a perfect place to start (and FREE!).

The How Far Will You Go? QAL was such a great experience.  I really want to thank Jess and Jess.  They  really did a fabulous job putting it together.  I really enjoyed the variety of blocks - unlike the endless HST blocks in the "other" QAL I was doing simultaneously.  And I thought the whole thing was very well run - a block every week, plenty of time in the end to get it together (even a procrastinator like me).  I know I will be revisiting some of their block tutorials in the future.

I also really appreciated that they allowed for multiple sized projects to participate at the end.  That is really thoughtful!  Last year was my first on the quilting web and I participated in a few other QALs and some were all or nothing at the end.  I could have made a set of coasters from the 5 inch blocks I had left over, and could have linked them up!  That is nice, and goes a long way to take the pressure off participating.  This is after all, supposed to be about having fun, right?

On a different note, it has been so crazy around here that I'm not sure I even mentioned Road to California is next week!  Last year I was literally counting down the days for this little "Mom-cation" of mine.  While I am super excited about it, this year I've almost let the whole thing sneak up on me because my focus has been elsewhere.  Now that I am in the final stretch, I really can't wait.

The classes I selected this year aren't particularly awe-inspiring, but I know I will learn something and I know  it will be lots of fun.  I get to hang out with one of my quilty friends and I'm even meeting up with Esther from Threads on the Floor.  I know we will have a great time.  I also hope to get loads of pictures for Inspirational Sunday posts, so you can feel like you got to go to the show too.

How Far Will You Go? - I went half way

After getting the top from the How Far Will You Go? QAL put together unexpectedly on Sunday, this one was begging me to finish it.  But how?

Sorry for the hideously dark photos.  The only room bright enough to take pictures in at night is the kitchen and even that isn't ideal.  I will try to get a few decent ones tomorrow if it is sunny.

I had actually written off joining the link up for the quilt along.  I didn't like the idea of letting the Jess's down after they put together such a marvelous QAL, but, I had no idea how I wanted to quilt it and I didn't want to rush it.  In the end, I just sat down and started to play around.  Once I got going, I really got going.  And it looked like the deadline might be possible to meet.

I will have you know that this is the only spiral in the whole quilt!

I finished all the quilting this afternoon before the kids had their activities, and I will admit that I was up after my bedtime finishing the binding, and writing this post.  But hey, it is done, and I like it!

I started by stitching in the ditch.  This was a bit of a mistake.  SID isn't a mistake in itself, I needed the stability it provides for some of the FMQ, but once you start SID-ing it is hard to know when to stop. It took a while. In the end I did almost all the seams except for some that when through the background areas.  It was a bit of a mistake because when I was FMQ, I had to use a bunch of those SID lines to travel to my next white space.  My FMQ travelling still needs some work.  So even if I hadn't wobbled with my walking foot, I definitely did with my free motion foot.  Plus now those stitch lines are a bit bulkier than they needed to be.  Ah well.  This was supposed to be practice - fun practice, but practice.

The obligatory back shot.  Nothing special here.

My quilt finished 40 x 50 inches, short of half the intended twin sized quilt for the QAL.  But I sure did have fun!

So that's it!  One UFO down for the month!  Yippee!!  Linking up with the HFQYG? QAL.

I obviously didn't get far - WIP Wednesday

My DH gave me some unexpected sewing time on Sunday, and I was able to finally put my top together using the How Far Will You Go? QAL blocks!  I really like how the blues turned out.  This is only about half of the blocks we were supposed to make.  After ordering 3 different colors to try to match the background fabric I ran out of, I gave up.  Terrible.  So as you can see, I didn't get very far in the How Far Will You Go? QAL.  Yet, my top measures 40 x 50 inches - OK for a toddler quilt or really big baby blanket.  I decided not to add borders to it, since it seems a little busy already with all those different fabrics.

I also have a backing and piece of batting ready for basting.  Unfortunately, I've been feeling a little under the weather the last few days, so I haven't progressed further.  I also have no idea how I am going to quilt this top.  Samplers always give me quilter's block.

This Wednesday...

• My Blue & White One Block Wonder -This is my January UFO - I decided to add some thin borders before backing this quilt.  They are only half put on.  :(  This quilt has also been stored for so long that I have no idea what (if any) plan I had for the backing.
• Bee Blocks & BOM blocks - I am ahead of the game for January Bee's, but I haven't started the BOM's yet.
• Star of Africa Bee - catch up time!!  
• Curves Class goodies - Class started Monday!  I am already super excited about several of the projects!!

Goal setting - the Finish Along quarterly report

Bear with me as I reveal one more list to start the New Year.  The 2013 Finish Along at She Can Quilt. is a quarterly to-do list, so here is what I hope to accomplish in the next 3 months:

• I've already designated the first UFO that I am going to tackle in January as the Blue One Block Wonder quilt.  
• 
• Also this quarter, I hope to finish up my Beginner QAL quilt and How Far Will You Go? quilt (obviously, I didn't get as far as I hoped on this one).
• Time to use up all those clothing fabric scraps I've been saving and make quilts for the girls.  These scraps are taking up important "new fabric" space, so they have to go!  This is the NewFO, I planned to start in January; however, I was reminded that I need to make....
• 2 baby quilts for friends who are expecting soon.  Like really soon.  So I better get working on them too.
• I have 4 Star of Africa Blocks to do already, plus another 2 from later in the quarter.
• I'll have 3 Skill Builder BOM blocks to do
• 4 Lucky Star BOM blocks to do
• 2 blocks each month, for a total of 6 blocks for the We Be Learning Bee - I've already started on January's blocks.
• 2 blocks each month, for a total of 4 blocks for the Simply Solids Bee (it starts in February)
• 2 blocks each month, for a total of 6 blocks for the Make it Modern Bee
• Winter Mug Rug for a Swap I signed up for - this one is already in progress as it is due soon.

Whew!  I am tired just typing about it.

Snowed In - Building Blocks Tuesday

Welcome to another Building Blocks Tuesday!  Here are a few more blocks from the How Far Will You Go? QAL.

Unfortunately, my "snow" dilemma continues.  I guess, "snow" just isn't what I got to begin with, despite how close it looks on the color card.  My most recent order of "snow" doesn't match either, and I also had a chance to stop by an actual quilt shop this weekend.  Their "snow" was also much whiter than mine.

See how much "creamer" my older fabric is?  OK, this is photo was taken in regular indoor light, so maybe it isn't too dramatic.

But in brighter sunlight, you can really see more of a difference!

I have 10 more blocks to go, 3 of which are the really big ones.  This quilt is not intended to have a sashing, so these two different fabrics would be side by side, and I am positive you will notice.  Luckily, the QAL does not require that all the blocks be finished or put into the top.  I think the best thing for me to do is figure out a configuration with the blocks I have.  Instead of a twin size quilt, I will have to shoot for a throw!

I really want to try out the remaining blocks.  I think I may make them with the whiter background and maybe work them into the quilt back, or make pillows.  I will have to see what the quilting suggestions are for the quilt top.  For now though, I am admitting that the "Snow" defeated me.

Someone peed in my snow - Building Blocks Tuesday

I have run into a problem.  While trying to catch up on my How Far Will You Go? QAL blocks, I seem to have run out of background material.  I had enough at the beginning, but I've might have used some here and  there for other things - really I have no self control.  Now, before you start shaking your heads or fingers, I actually realized I was running out last week and put in an order.  HOWEVER, when it came, it wasn't the same color.

I've been using Kona Snow, or at least what I thought was Kona Snow, which I ordered a while ago.  When it first came, I joked in my solids group on the 3 x 6 Bee that someone must have peed in my snow, because it wasn't as white as I thought it was going to be (isn't snow white?).  This is also how I got into my head that it was the "Snow" color.   When my package arrived this week, it looked much whiter.  I began to think to myself that maybe I was wrong initially and it wasn't the "Snow" color I had after all.  A smart woman would have checked the color card I have BEFORE placing an order.  I am not necessarily a smart woman.  BUT, I did check the color card after receiving my new fabric.  My old Snow matches the card.  My new Snow does not.  In fact, I am pretty sure that it is PDF White (which I used in Totally Groovy and what do you know, it matches).  So now what?  I was tempted to use the PDF White for the rest of the blocks, but I think it would be a very noticeable difference.  Snow really looks almost ivory, while PDF white is just barely off white.

I contacted Fat Quarter Shop to see what could be done.  They are willing to swap it out, IF I ship it back to them myself (nearly the cost of a yard of Kona, I might add).  I'm not sure it is really worth 2 yards, plus when I checked their site, they were out of Snow yardage completely.

This is the downside to not having a local quilt shop.

So, I have decided to keep the PDF White, and order some Snow from somewhere else.  I have been TRYING to limit my fabric purchases lately, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do!  Plus it gave me a chance to try out a new online retailer!  Of course, it is another purchase and it might land me on the naughty list.

What the heck have I been doing? - Fresh Sewing Day

I know I ask myself every month, "where is the time going?", but this month I am really scratching my head wondering that question.

When I went to put together this month's mosaic, I kept thinking, "Is this it?".  I feel like I sewed A LOT this month, but the mosaic doesn't lie.  I only got a bunch of blocks done, one quilt (that was essentially mostly complete already), and one place mat.  It's a sorry state of affairs considering there is still so much to do.

Well, I guess I can stay here and lament about not getting enough done, or I can get crackin' so next month I am not wondering - what the heck have I been doing!

I haven't gotten far - Building Blocks Tuesday

I survived the Thanksgiving Holiday!  My turkey even came out well!  I am happy to be back to our regular schedule - at least for a few weeks until the Christmas break begins.  

It seems I haven't gotten very far in the How Far Will You Go? QAL.  I just added up all the blocks left for me to complete, and the ones I have done so far - and I am not even half done!  Yikes!

This one is called "Dutch Rose".  I simplified my version a little by only using 2 different fabrics in the outer "ring".  This block is huge!  20 inches!  It took a long time to make - I stopped counting after 4 hours.

This little one is called "Another Star", and I had quite a bit of trouble with it for some reason.  The center of the star was easy enough, but the components of the points were tricky.  Mine just never wanted to be long enough.  In the end I am a little shy of square in 2 spots.  I may have to redo this one.

2 down, 18 more to go!

I've got an itch - WIP Wednesday

Oh, have I got an itch!  An itch to start a new project.  So far I have avoided scratching said itch, but I am not a person known for self control!

For example, I have tried to put myself on a fabric diet for months, but that hasn't exactly worked out (in fact I have a package due to arrive on my doorstep this week).  Do I need more fabric?  No!  Have I been able to use some of the wonderful fabric I have purchased lately?  Well, have you seen any fabric using my huge stash of Flea Market Fancy?  Happy Drawing?  Polka Dot Stitches?  How 'bout Tula Pink Birds and the Bees?  (just to name a few)  So no, not really.

What have I been working on?  Blocks, and pillowcases.

• Star of Africa Bee - October's block is due by the 15th of November.  The theme is favorite children's book characters/fairy tales, etc.  MY problem is that most of my favorites are British!  I have finally found a few American stories in our library that are favorites.  I hesitate to tell you which ones, because the blocks won't be easy.  Stay tuned...
• Preschool Pillowcases - WHY did I start with the hideous fleece fabric they gave me???  I have discovered that I don't like working with fleece.  It's far to easy to stretch, and I can't help but think it is the absolute WORST fabric for pillowcases.  What were they thinking?  I don't know, so I will just persevere.  Up next, flannel.  I am pretty sure, the school was hoping to get more cases out of the fabric they gave me (I am already using every scrap), so I think I will supplement with regular cottons from my stash - I mean they must need some regular cotton cases too, right?  This is Southern California.  We have HOT days even in the middle of winter.  Don't want those little babes curling up with a fleece pillow when it is 90 degrees out (like yesterday for instance)!
• How Far Will You Go? QAL - Catch up in progress. 
• Miscellaneous sewn gifties - time to get started on gifts.

A name is just a name, unless it is surrounded by FMQ - WIP Wednesday

With Halloween almost upon us, and my husband out of town, I've been busy and had very little sewing time this week (especially compared to the last 2 weeks).  I only got one block done for the How Far Will You Go? QAL, and my item for the Free Motion Challenge at SewCalGal.

This month's challenge by Teri Lucas was to write your name (I actually did my daughter's) and practice several designs around it, including a grid of some kind.  She also suggested the shells and the feathers.  As you can see, feathers still plague me, but that is truly my fault as I have not practiced them as much as other designs.

Those shells were also difficult for me as my mind couldn't quite figure out how it wanted to accomplish the layers or rings of the shell - whether to travel stitch back to the inner circle or travel stitch along a spine in a serpentine fashion.  I tried it both ways and neither was very comfortable.  It was also nearly impossible for me to stitch the design at the speed I am most comfortable with (medium), thus the stitches of the shells are rather tiny from moving my hands much slower than the machine was going.  All in all though, I liked the design.

There was also a bonus tutorial by Diane Loomis released this month that I would really like to try involving trapunto.  It seems like a perfectly reasonable skill to have if you are quilting.  I will have to try it out soon, but I can't think of any projects I have in the works to add it to.  I will have to keep pondering that one.

• Free Motion Challenge item - my heart was broken after the Totally Groovy disaster, I could barely bring myself to get this one done.  I think I rallied well enough, and now my other two daughters want one of these too.

I am a one block wonder - Building Blocks Tuesday

I have started catching up on the blocks for the How Far Will You Go? QAL.  Well, I have done ONE block this week!  I am about 8 weeks behind somehow.  I didn't realize I had taken THAT much time off, but time has really been going by quickly lately and I know it isn't going to slow down until after the New Year.

I started with last week's block and plan on working backwards.  I figured that would inspire me to make sure they actually got finished.  This week is threatening to be a little crazier than normal with Halloween and such.  I am also teaching my first art class for Ashley's 1st grade class on Thursday.  As usual, I will let you know how it goes.  Hopefully, I will have more blocks to share with you despite all the craziness.
