100 Day Hustle finale

Time for a 100 Day Hustle recap!

100 day hustle

1. Lizzy teacher gift, 2. Ashley teacher gift, 3. Vintage Holiday front, 4. IMG_1673, 5. Olivia's Quilt front, 6. The Grinch, 7. Totally Groovy, 8. Groovy back, 9. mosaicc622aaa0d425fe2aca04436e06c45899b21bb454, 10. Hurricane Blocks, 11. Leaf table runner, 12. sashiko coasters, 13. 3 x 6 solids mosaic, 14. preschool pillowcases, 15. sept star of africa, 16. Batik stripe in focus

Here is my list:
  • 12  Bee blocks for the 3 x 6 Bee DONE
  • 3 blocks for the Star of Africa bee - 1 1/2 DONE - The Grinch needs a little more work, and I now have 2 more to do to get me through January.
  • At least 1 block for the Leafs Me Happy Blog Hop - DONE
  • Pillowcases for my daughter's preschool - DONE
  • Finish Totally Groovy - DONE
  • Quilt the Batik Stripe quilt - DONE
  • small gifties for a few of my bee mates
  • Another small gift for my daughters' teachers (2) - DONE
  • The Sashiko coasters - DONE
  • finish the Vintage Holiday QAL top- DONE
  • Finish Olivia's applique quilt - DONE
Added:
  • Hurricane Sandy Blocks - DONE
  • Christmas decorations - DONE
So, not too shabby, right?  I really wish I had gotten some little gifties out for my bee mates, not to mention finished up the blocks that are due.  I suppose that not getting them done gives me the opportunity to send little surprises to them randomly in the New Year.

I really enjoyed doing the "Hustle" this year.  Just making a list and trying to figure out what was realistically going to get done, really helped me focus.  And of course, having others sharing their lists and triumphs motivated me to do the same.  I will definitely be participating again next year.

How did you do with your 2012 finale?

Halftime! - 100 Day Hustle

I can hardly believe we are HALF way through the 100 Day Hustle!  My head is spinning. Thanks to a good start, I am still on track with my list (though I have made very little progress since the 1/3 mark).

Mosaic from the 1/3 mark of the Hustle
Since then, I have also finished:

These HUGE 33 inch square pillowcases for the preschool.  I had to stuff 4 of my couch pillows inside to give you an idea of the size. Tookie helped, of course.

These are a few of the flannel ones.
rainbow kitties anyone??
Hmm, I guess I've only finished pillowcases since then.  It is completely silly that these took up so much time!  Ah well!  That's the way it goes sometimes.

Here's My list:
  • 12 Bee blocks for the 3 x 6 Bee - DONE
  • 3 blocks for the Star of Africa bee - One down, two to go!
  • Blocks for the Leafs Me Happy Blog Hop -DONE, you can see them here.
  • Pillowcases for my daughter's preschool - DONE.  9 pillowcases total!  I went through all the fabric that the school gave me, but it didn't make as many pillowcases as they hoped.  Luckily, I recently won a grab bag full of, mostly horrid, fabric in a raffle at a guild meeting.  Since the kids will probably actually like rainbow kitty cats, cows and chickens, rainbow teddy bears (Hoffman fabric circa 1991), and little sea creatures (timeless treasures circa 1996!), I made some additional pillowcases with that fabric.  I think my work is done for a little while.
  • Finish Totally Groovy - partially done.  I still need to patch up the holes and label it properly.
  • Quilt the Batik Stripe quilt - DONE
  • small gifties for a few of my bee mates - I have a few started, one done.
  • Another small gift for my daughters' teachers (2) - not started :(, but these should go quickly once I get them going.
  • The Sashiko coasters from my Handstitched class - DONE and already gifted to someone.
  • finish the Vintage Holiday QAL quilt - this one is awaiting quilting.
  • Finish Olivia's applique quilt - the blocks are done but need to be pieced together into a top, then backed, quilted, etc.
I also ended up adding a few items:
  • Hurricane Sandy blocks - 9 made so far.
  • Christmas decorations - I want to make some wall art, and perhaps a few ornaments.

How are you doing on your list?

Paper Pieced Star Block Review

This Sunday, something a bit different, a block review!  Specifically a review of the Paper Pieced Star Block  from the book, Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters.

OK.  A while back, I promised a review of this block.  I made several for a paper pieced hive in the 3 x 6 Bee group on Flickr.  This was the block I chose to make, and I had some difficulties with it.

First, before making 6 blocks for other people, I like to make a tester block so I know what I am getting into.  My tester block came out alright.

It isn't perfect. As you can see, the block is a little tilted.  I probably had to cut it that way because the background fabric (the cream) didn't allow for trimming properly.  But, the center points actually look OK.  So I figured, I could easily make sure I trimmed a little more straightly and all would be well.

It wasn't that easy.  The next block I made, also couldn't be trimmed properly because the background fabric didn't reach all the way to one corner.  My points in the center also did not align properly, so I took the block completely apart and tried again.  Twice.

The block's construction seems straightforward.  You make the paper pieces, put them together, trim the block to size, then add the borders.  I am not sure what the deal was, but one of the pieces in the pattern gave me more trouble than others, piece #3, and because of it my trimming was limited.  At first I thought that maybe that pattern piece was increased differently when I printed the pattern out, but the other pieces on the same paper were the right size, so???   And, my points just weren't playing nicely.   Something about having five pieces coming together in a half, instead of the usual four, really threw things off.  So, I looked for tips from some of my favorite paper-piecers.

Thanks to some fabulous tips I read on Lily's Quilts, some I learned in a paper pieced class, and some of my own, I was able to finish the blocks and have them come out alright.  I want to share these tips with you.
The first tip is Lynne's from Lily's Quilts.  She suggests adding an additional amount of background fabric around your block by redrawing these lines on your foundation pieces:

As you can see, I added about 1/2 inch all the way around.  This STILL wasn't enough.  For this particular block, I think I would add at least 3/4 inch.

Once you get all the pieces of the star paper pieced and it is time to put them together, I found it very helpful to lay them face down, in numerical order before sewing the pieces together.  For some reason, even if I ordered them correctly, but had them face up, I would inevitably put two of the pieces together on the wrong sides.

Next a tip I picked up from Carol Doak, with an additional tip from Lynne.  When putting your seams from two pieces together, stick a pin vertically into the seam line on your foundation.

If the pin, pierces the line on the underside piece, you know your seams will be in the right place.

Then place pins to hold your pieces together as you normally would.  If the pins you pierced the lines with, are still straight up and down, you know your pieces didn't shift, and your seams will be where they are supposed to be.

the one on the right is being pushed by the mat underneath, but look at how straight the center pin is!
Now the important part from Lynne - ***make sure you sew this seam from the center point OUT towards the sides of your block.***  No matter how well you pin, some shifting may still occur under the foot of your machine.  You want to make sure the center seams are sewn first to minimize the shifting in this area.  It is less important toward the edges of the block.

Another great tip from Lynne involves the last step - sewing the two halves of the block together - if you apply the same pinning method above, but make sure there is a vertical pin right in the center where your points are aligning.  Take your pinned pieces over to your machine and try to replace this vertical pin with the needle of your machine (putting the machine needle in the same hole you just removed your pin from) - sewing from the center of the block towards one side, then starting in the center again, sew to the opposite side.  I found it a little tricky to actually replace the pin, BUT I did think the results were much better trying this tip than if I just sewed the entire seam from one side of the block to the other.

There you have it.  A block much closer to the way it is supposed to look.

Do I recommend this block?

Well.......I did find it much more difficult than some of the other paper pieced stars I have tried in the past that had eight segments instead of the ten this one has.  This might not seem that important, but I think it added a degree of difficulty since the block wasn't in perfect proportions from the start.  Plus, look at all the adjustments I had to make to the pattern to get it to work nicely!  If it wasn't for Lynne's tips, these blocks would have been a disaster!

Thus, I don't think I would recommend it for any beginners.  I even think it will be quite a while before I try it again.

As for the book, Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop for Quilters, I'm not ready yet to write a full review of the book.  I've only tried two blocks and I doubt it would be a fair review if I stopped there.  So look for that book review later after I've had time to play some more.

I hope this was helpful!

Thanks for reading,

Jen

Bee done already! - WIP Wednesday

"Hurry up!"
"Do you really think we will get this done before she walks in?"
"Oh, no I've been spotted!"  I hear the "click, click" of the door, then she strolls in....

and immediately starts "helping".  Oh well, despite Tookie's "help", I did manage to get my Vintage Holiday quilt basted yesterday.

I still have no idea how I am going to quilt it.  I started drawing out some designs in my notebook, but I have a tendency to choose designs that may end up looking to busy.  I may just go for it anyway!

Somehow, I escaped Jury Duty on Monday and finished up those bee blocks for the 3 x 6.  Whew!  Yesterday, I didn't have to report either, so I finished my coasters, basted my leaf table runner and the quilt above, and even had a little time to pull out Totally Groovy!

Today, I plan to piece a little more of it before switching my set up over to quilting mode!  I'll get warmed up with the table runner, then what??  Friday, I fully expect to have to report to the court, so I better get my Star of Africa block ready for the handwork portion.  If I have to sit around all day, I better have something to do!

This Wednesday......

Completed Projects:
  • 6 blocks for the paper piecing hive of the 3 x 6 Bee - the final 6 blocks!  DONE!
  • Sashiko coasters - DONE! I decided that I didn't want to restitch the one that looked different.  I figure, every group has its quirky member, so will my coaster set.

On-going Projects:

AKA - "stuff I plan to touch this week".
  • Vintage Holiday Quilt Along - top done, backing done, sandwiched and basted.  Needs quilting and I am suffering from quilter's block.  I can't decide on a design.
  • Totally Groovy Quilt Along - piecing in progress, top now approximately 1/2 done
  • Leaf Table runner - Backed and basted, needs quilting.
  • Star of Africa Bee - September's block is now late!, and now October's block is now due.  I have a design planned for September's block, but I am trying to figure out how to avoid paper piecing it!  Terrible, huh?
  • Batik Stripe Quilt - this one is moving up the lists!  I plan on starting the quilting this week!  Perhaps I should rename this one "Sleeping Beauty".  It has been waiting for ages for true love's stitch.  Part of  my 100 Day Hustle list.

Back Burner:

These projects are part of my 100 Day Hustle List also, but will likely be touched in a couple of weeks.
  • Preschool Pillowcases
  • How Far Will You Go? QAL - I put this one aside until my blocks for the bees were done.  Now they are, but I need a tiny break from blocks (especially paper pieced ones).
  •  Handstitched Medallion Quilt - THE main project of the class.  I actually did have an opportunity to rip out the borders that have been giving me trouble, but now I need to fix them and sew them back on again.
The Back, Back Burner:

Lightning would have to strike twice.

This week's stats:
Completed projects - 2!
New projects - 0
Currently in Progress - 5

Don't forget to link up any blocks you have been working on to yesterday's post!  The linky stays open for a whole week, so feel free to add them as you complete or wait for next Tuesday (or both)!

Paper Pieced Stars - Building Blocks Tuesday

I've been working all week on the last 6 blocks for the 3 x 6 bee, specifically my paper piecing hive.  I chose a block out of the book, Fat Quarterly Shape Workshop - really the only paper pieced block in the book.

If it looks familiar, that's because I tested the block out with my fall fabrics for the Leafs Me Happy Blog Hop last week (see the post here).  One would think that testing the block would have given me some insight on how to complete the block successfully.  Well, yes and no.  I still had troubles.  Lots and lots of troubles! In fact, I would say the test block came together the easiest.  But of course, I am too stubborn to give up easily.

If you look at the block above, you can see clearly that I need to work on those center points, and the block appears slightly off center (because it is, see the bottom fans are not even).

my favorite

Lynne at Lily's Quilts provided the help I needed (check out her post).  I added at least 1/2 inch onto the outside seam allowances, so I would be able to trim the block to size, thus avoiding the lopsidedness of my test block.  Also, Lynne recommends sewing all your individual pieces together by starting from the points outward.  This REALLY helped!  If you sew in the other direction, even the best pinning job can shift a bit, making your points crooked.

These lovely tips got me through the paper piecing of the block, but that didn't mean that disaster could strike....I trimmed one of the blocks to small on one side, and had to start the whole block over again (now I have a small red, white and blue one for myself!).  Also, one bee mate didn't choose a color combo and wanted to be surprised.  As I was cutting all my fabric out, the one box I hadn't touched in a while was my black/white/gray box.  But, I didn't consult the information about my bee mate given at the start of the bee.  Turns out she dislikes neutral colors, and what color did I make her block?  Yep, black, gray and white - can't get any more neutral than that!  So another block needed to be made for her.

I'll keep this one!
Is this more colorful?

Now, I am still no expert, and not all my points came out perfectly.  But, I think these turned out nicely.  I hope my bee mates agree.

I am considering writing up a little "review" of this block - a lessons learned type thing, since there were many.  I need a few days to put my thoughts together.  As for paper piecing, I might need to take a little break after these.  Unfortunate, since the How Far Will You Go QAL has several paper pieced blocks that I need to catch up on.  These stars were time consuming and a bit frustrating, and my brain needs to reset.  I think I will go back to curves...ha!

Now then, enough about me and my struggles for the week.  What have you been working on?

Link up your fabulous blocks.  You put a lot of hard work into them - show them off!  And, don't forget, you have all week to add them if you like.

A tilted view - Building Block Tuesday

No need to adjust your computer screen these blocks are definitely tilted.  These blocks are destined for my bee mates in the solids group of the 3 x 6 Bee. I found this lovely geometric pattern in the book, Fat Quarterly's Shape Workshop for Quilters.

I am still working on 6 more blocks for the paper pieced hive that I joined this quarter.  I am finding that hive a lot more difficult to do.  Partly because, since we are not limited to solids, choosing the right fabrics gets trickier.  Plus, I have had a hard time deciding which block to use.  I am still a bit new to paper piecing, and the first block I attempted was definitely more than I could handle.  I have tested a few more, but it is crunch time and I need to settle on one.  I suppose, next Tuesday I will have them all done and ready to show you.

Also don't forget, there are more blocks coming up tomorrow for the Leafs Me Happy Blog Hop .  There are so many blocks that have been submitted for this blog hop, and all of them are wonderful!  Come back tomorrow for my humble blocks and visit the talented quilters below to view theirs.

Crack that WIP - WIP Wednesday

Sashiko coasters in progress
While vacations are certainly nice, returning from them can give one a sense of urgency with regard to a to do list.  Thankfully, I was not completely idle on my trip.  I brought two hand projects with me including the Sashiko coasters you see above, and those darn Christmas print hexies that I am still not sure what I will do with.  The Sashiko is rather fun.  I am not sure I did a wonderful job at it, but I did enjoy the process.  I have two more coasters to complete the set, and these obviously need the backing fabric attached.

Unfortunately, now that I am back and have access to my sewing machine again, other items on my list  have a higher priority than these fun hand projects.  Bee blocks in particular, as they are due on the 15th, and my Leafs Me Happy blocks for the blog hop on the 10th.  There have already been some amazing blocks shown, so the bar is quite high!  The Sew We Quilt site has a link to the Pinterest Board where you can see all the blocks submitted thus far.

Well, I better crack that whip and get some more things done...

Jen

This Wednesday......

Completed Projects:
  • 6 Bee Blocks for the solids group of the 3 x 6 Bee - but you will have to wait until Building Block Tuesday to see them
  • 1 block for the Leafs Me Happy Blog Hop - you have to come back on the 10th to see!

On-going Projects:

I've decided these are actually the projects I hope to touch within the next week.
  • Vintage Holiday Quilt Along - top needs to be put together, sashing is partially cut
  • Totally Groovy Quilt Along - piecing in progress
  • 6 more Bee Blocks - paper piecing in progress.
  • Leaf's Me Happy block(s) - My date is October 10th. 1 block down, ?? to go.
  • Sashiko coasters - I started these on my trip!!  I have the embroidery on 4 done, though the one in the top left probably needs to be re-done.  The stitches are way to big.  These are part of my 100 Day Hustle list

Back Burner:

These projects are part of my 100 Day Hustle List also, but will likely be touched in a couple of weeks.
  • Batik Stripe Quilt - still sandwiched and ready to be quilted!  I moved this one up because it is part of  my 100 Day Hustle list.
  • Star of Africa Bee - September's block, and now October's block
  • Preschool Pillowcases
  • How Far Will You Go? QAL - Putting this one aside until my blocks for the bees are done.  But I would like to at least catch up with the blocks here and there as not to get too far behind.  This one is scheduled to be completed after the 100 Day Hustle, but I'll never finish it then if I don't keep up somewhat.
The Back, Back Burner:

Lightning would have to strike twice.
  • Handstitched goodies - several projects in limbo.
  • Beginner Quilt Along at Quilting Gallery - top needs to be put together
  • Red, White, Blue New York Beauty - piecing in progress, but put well out of the way.  I need to be in a paper-piecing mood to resume.
  • EPP project - in progress. I still have not decided what to make with these little hexies.  I am leaning toward either mug rugs or place mats.  I just didn't make enough of them to make a table runner.
  • Charity quilt for the guild - not started

This week's stats:
Completed projects - just blocks
New projects - 0
Currently in Progress - 5-ish

Get to it - Building Blocks Tuesday

I just arrived home late last night, and already my head is swimming with all the things that need doing for the rest of the week.  Top priorities on the quilting list are my bee blocks for the 3 x 6 Bee and the Star of Africa Bee, and also a block or two for the Leafs Me Happy Blog Hop which started yesterday.  Here are the stops for today:

Tuesday 2

and if you are interested in the full schedule, click here.  My day is coming up on the 10th.  I really enjoy the Blog Hops from Sew We Quilt.  There is such a diversity of blocks and techniques.  It is so inspirational.

My trip didn't allow me to make any new blocks to show you this week, but this is the block I have chosen to make for my solids group of the 3 x 6 Bee.  I hope to make six more of these today!

Now then, what have you been working on?

Link up your fabulous blocks.  You put a lot of hard work into them - show them off!  And, don't forget, you have all week to add them if you like.

Are you doing the hustle?

Marit at Sy, elsk, lev (Sew, Love, Live) clued me in to a great little "party" going on over at Kelsey Sews, called the 100 Day Hustle.  Basically, we try to finish up our to do list before the end of the year (now less than 100 days left).

Really the key to success is choosing a list that can actually be accomplished, right?  Not really my strong suit, but here it goes:
  • 12 Bee blocks for the 3 x 6 Bee - I am putting these on the list because they are high priority and have to be done by October 15th, which is within the 100 days.  I have already decided to take next quarter off, so I can work on the rest of my list.
  • I will also have 3 blocks for the Star of Africa bee that will need to be finished by the end of the year.
  • At least one block for the Leafs Me Happy Blog Hop - my day is October 10th (like right around the corner!!!)
  • Pillowcases for my daughter's preschool - I committed to this months and months ago, and they finally got me the fabric a couple of weeks ago.  They are relaxed about the finish date, but it really should be by the end of the year.
  • Finish Totally Groovy - to be given as a gift for Christmas
  • Quilt the Batik Stripe quilt - this one is just for me.
  • small gifties for a few of my bee mates
  • Another small gift for my daughters' teachers (2)
  • The Sashiko coasters from my Handstitched class - these too would make great gifts.
  • finish the Vintage Holiday QAL top
  • Finish Olivia's applique quilt - the blocks are done.
This list seems small (especially compared to the UFO Sunday one I made), but it includes 4 quilts to be quilted, and quilting takes me a while.  I will truly be lucky if I get those done.  I also know that there will undoubtedly be other things that will "pop" up between now and then.

Wish me luck!  Lord knows I am going to need it!

Hey, it's something! - WIP Wednesday

I haven't made as much progress on my project during the last few days as I hoped.  I've had a little one home sick, and instead of sewing I've been watching the latest Barbie movie and the Little Mermaid over and over and over and over again!  The upside is that the music is fairly good in both movies!

Gram's place mats all sandwiched and ready to go.  Thank you to everyone who helped me see that the yellow background on the 2nd one really needed to be changed!  I like this cream much better!

This Wednesday......

Completed Projects:
  • Trial block for solid's group of 3x6 Bee (hey it's a start!)
  • Let's Get Acquainted Blog Hop Item - Done, done, and done - come back TOMORROW for the reveal!

On-going Projects:
  • Vintage Holiday Quilt Along - top needs to be put together
  • Totally Groovy Quilt Along - started, albeit a small start
  • How Far Will You Go? QAL - I might need to put this one aside for a little while.  Luckily the QAL goes through January, so I will have plenty of time to catch up.
  • Beginner Quilt Along at Quilting Gallery - top needs to be put together
  • Star of Africa Bee - September's block
  • "Tree" themed quilt for the guild - since I got my top done for the LGABH, I actually started this one. I am not sure I like how it is going nor am I sure I will get it done by the deadline.
  • Grammie's place mats - tops are done.  Quilting will commence tonight after the kiddos are in bed. Deadline Sept 22nd (because my plane leaves on the 23rd!)
  • 12 Bee Blocks - piecing in progress.
  • Leaf's Me Happy block(s) - I finally got my date for this blog hop - October 10th.  Designs in progress

Back Burner:

I am determined not to forget these projects!  Keeping them in this category reminds me of them on a weekly basis.
  • Handstitched goodies - several projects in limbo.  I am preparing a few of these for my week long trip next week.  I figure it is the perfect time to make some progress on these items, especially the small ones.
  • Batik Stripe Quilt - still sandwiched and ready to be quilted!
  • Red, White, Blue New York Beauty - piecing in progress, but put well out of the way.  I need to be in a paper-piecing mood to resume.
  • June UFO - "A Christmas Something for myself" -EPP in progress.
  • Charity quilt for the guild - not started
This week's stats:
Completed projects - 1 + 1 block
New projects - 0
Currently in Progress - 9-ish

Quick trips and Idle times - WIP Wednesday

This is what I am working on for the next three days:

No, you are right, that is NOT a quilt.  It is a picture I took of Yosemite Valley in 2005.  Today Ashley and I are headed back there for a quick trip.  It is such a beautiful place, full of surprises...

I really can't wait to share the experience with my eldest.

But, I won't be completely idle.  The car ride is at least 6 hours, so I will have plenty of time to work on these:

My little hexies for my "Christmas" table runner.

And, I did have time to start working on my backing for the medallion quilt.  Here is a sneak peak:

This Wednesday......

Completed Projects:  Basically all my blocks from yesterday's post.
On-going Projects:
  • Handstitched goodies - there are so many projects I want to return to, and I still need to complete my backing for the medallion quilt.
  • Design something for the Let's Get Acquainted Blog Hop - I have my idea, I have my fabric, I need to put it in motion
  • Vintage Holiday Quilt Along - actually started August 6th.  I already need to catch up, luckily the cutting is all really similar for each block.
  • Totally Groovy Quilt Along - the sewing starts soon!
  • Star of Africa Bee -I need to do the July block in PINK
  • "Tree" themed quilt for the guild - the guild is having a quilt show in October and each member is asked to make a small quilt with a "tree" theme.  I am going to make something similar to Ashley's teacher's Thank you quilt below.

Back Burner:

I am determined not to forget these projects!  Keeping them in this category reminds me of them on a weekly basis.
  • Batik Stripe Quilt - still sandwiched and ready to be quilted!

  • Thank you quilt for Ashley's teacher - awaiting quilting
