Today's "work on what I want, when I want" project was just starting to look to yummy not to share another little sneak peak for WIP Wednesday. I hope to have it finished up on Friday. I have a bit of quilting left to do, and I want to hand bind it (which I do not do quickly). I hope you will come back then to see the entire project.
I really enjoy the actual quilting process. I get almost giddy when things are starting to take shape. But I am starting to notice a trend in my work -- I prefer to quilt the negative space. Now, in this project I think it is OK, since the triangles are so tiny anyway, but I've got a few tops, like my Swoon quilt, that will need quilting soon and I have no trouble envisioning how to quilt the negative space, but am completely clueless how to quilt the actual block.
Does anyone else have this problem?

ReplyDeleteI love your quilting :-) I never really thought about if I just quilt the negative space or not, but now that I think about it I might tend to do the same thing!
ReplyDeleteI too have that problem but not sure how I solve it! I do a lot of looking around and hope inspiration strikes. this looks stunning and can't wait to see the whole thing done!

ReplyDeleteEvery quilt presents new designs to be discovered as you know. It can totally be tricky at first envisioning those designs right away! I just try not to think about ALL the negative space I have to cover and DO IT! Know what I mean? Actually a lot of times I will skip the blocks themselves and let them "pop out" on their own with the help of the quilting around them. I love,love your "curly" quilting in between each point.

ReplyDeleteYah, I feel ya on that. I think part of the problem (for me anyhow) is that with the negative space thread choice is pretty easy (a similarly-colored neutral thread). But when it comes to quilting the colored blocks, do you then match each of the colors? Do you just stick with neutrals? Do you just choose one color for everything? Gah! Too many choices!

ReplyDeletethis is so beautiful. I am still a stitch in the ditcher, so I have no feedback on quilt technique, other than to say, do what works for you. As long as you're happy, and it's working, just keep swimming!

Great quilting! I cannot help so much with quilting advise because this is the part I spend the most thinking too :)
ReplyDeleteIf you don't want to stitch on the print, you could just go round the piecing in the ditch maybe?
ReplyDeleteOK, those swirls between the rays are too stinkin' cool. :D I like leaving the elements unquilted, too - just outlined - if they're not too big. I think it's better that way, anyway, because it leaves them standing out more in dimension than the background and gives the negative-space quilting the spotlight without competing with each other. When elements are too big to leave unquilted, I like sticking with very simple things that leave the shine of quilting in the negative space.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have the same problem. I don't want to mess up the blocks by covering them with distracting quilting. But either way, this looks gorgeous so far. I can't wait to see the whole thing!
