January Check-In -- Fabriholics Anonymous

FabAnon

Time to check in.  January is almost over, and I am happy to report that I haven't purchased any fabric.   It has been extremely difficult for me, especially during this trip.  I have pinpointed my weak spots - loneliness and boredom. I tend to buy when I am alone at night after the kids have gone to bed and when my DH is travelling.  I miss him and don't have him there as a distraction from the buy now button.

And wasn't the Great De-stash on Instagram a pain?  For those of you with the willpower and fortitude to actually just de-stash and not buy, all the power too you.  I don't have that discipline, and was sorely tempted every time I opened Instagram.  I had to turn it off to survive.

While on my trip, I have really struggled too.  My body has clung to West Coast time and after I leave Gram and go to my room, I am up for hours trying to make myself sleepy and what am I doing?  Surfing the internet of course.  I try really hard to stay away from the actual online fabric store sites, but catching up on my blog reading is almost as bad since many people are sharing their latest purchases or projects with new, fabulous fabric.  I've also been making mental lists of all the projects I want to get started on when I get home, some of which may need some supplemental fabric (or not).  I am literally starting to twitch a bit thinking about it.

Then of course, there is the fact that I am a total CHEATER.  I pre-ordered some fabric back in November, before I signed up for this challenge, and it arrived the day before I left.  Lovely, new, beautiful fabric that I can't wait to cut into when I return.  I am hoping that the promise of doing just that will help me make it a few more days.

Ahhhhhhh! (twitch, twitch)  If you are imagining me sitting at the computer twitching and gnawing at my fingers as if to free them from an invisible trap enclosing them, you might be accurate.

In other news, I have also managed not to buy any more Craftsy classes, and have even been watching some of the ones I already have late at night while I try to settle down.

Thanks for reading,

Jen

  1. I tried so hard to join in on the fabric diet! I'm so weak! I broke down and bought some, twice!! I have held off on the Craftsy classes though. I feel your pain and admire your willpower! Hold strong! I'll diet through you!

  2. Great job on not buying fabric -- My failures may mean I take the non buying an additional month at the end to try and make it a solid 6 months.

  3. Excellent work!

I found I like to buy when I'm bored, too. I also found it helps to buy something non-fabric to fill the "need" to buy something. For me it can be as small as a $1 roll of seasonal ribbon at Target. I get the "it's NEW!" fix but I'm not out much money and it is something I will use.

  4. I have only bought backing fabric (once) and white and black for background fabric. I am so happy. I am way behind on blog reading because I don't want the temptation. I am really enjoying using up fabric I have -- I can't believe how satisfying that is! Can you take a small hand project to hand-bind or something while you travel? The internet is just too tempting for me!

  5. And in case you're wondering, you blog entry comes into my email vs. my blog roll -- so I can still read your entries!

  7. Isn't it easy to buy with a click! I've bought far too much already this year, but I think I've stopped now! Look forward to seeing your recent delivery! Hope the family are getting on ok without you !

  8. I did not sign up for the challenge but have been trying to sew something fun each day and am amazed that I have NOT had to make any purchases - age 66 here and have more fabric than I can ever use...and you know what I still like the old and the new fabrics...so do a crazy pieced block out of cottons, or a log cabin table runner or some 1/2 sq.triangles or 4 patches - stitching heals the restless soul - I know you can do it!! 9. Aw, Jen! While I haven't "officially" joined the fast, I have not purchased any new fabric this year....yet! Alot of it has to do with the lousy exchange on our dollar right now, but I am also trying really hard to use what I have. But, so many gorgeous new lines out there! Hope your Gran is doing well, and will be home soon.

  10. Well done you! Sounds like the withdrawal symptoms are bad, but it can only get better as your bank balance increases and your stash decreases.

  12. I bought background fabric because my OH wasn't happy with what I had for his quilt, but even backing and binding I am doing OK on, it's a lot harder than I thought though, I even spent a whole day in a fabric shop with our MQG- arrggghhh!

  14. I have bought some backing fabric and background fabric. I should be good to finish out most of my projects. I did have an oops with a monthly subscription but I managed to get it cancelled for February.

  15. I buy out of boredom too but my biggest downfall is a good sale! You are brave to do this... Be strong! Delete those sale emails and catch up on your Craftsy classes.

  16. I am with you on the de stashing. Posted on my blog about my january success too. It wasn't hard...this month. I was sick one week, had no money the next week, didn't have a car most of one week so thankfully I had some "help" in not buying...but... February...might have a problem I have to go tomorrow as I am that way in town to get some prints to match the solids I have for a wedding quilt due in April. All the new stuff out there! But.. .so far only 3 coupons and I don't buy unless I have a coupon so might have some salvation there! But..we can do it! can't we????!!

I had to shut off comments for a long time because I was just getting spammed. I'm going to try moderation for a while and see if that helps. Please leave me a comment.
